Safety is an important part of how we design, manufacture, and support our products.
Heybike products are designed with safety in mind and tested to meet applicable U.S. safety requirements and certifications. Our battery systems incorporate multiple layers of protection, including Battery Management System (BMS) features designed to monitor important operating conditions.
We take product safety seriously, and we will continue to review and improve our products, processes, and safety resources as part of our commitment to our riders.
Battery Safety During Extreme Heat
While the cause of the reported incident has not yet been determined, we also want to remind our community about general lithium-ion battery safety, especially during periods of extreme heat.
High ambient temperatures and direct sunlight can affect lithium-ion battery performance, health, and safety. Proper charging, storage, and handling are important parts of responsible e-bike ownership.
For practical guidance, please review our Summer Battery Care Guide
Storage & Temperature Management
Avoid Direct Sunlight
Do not leave your e-bike or battery in direct sunlight for extended periods. Battery enclosures can absorb significant radiant heat, potentially causing internal temperatures to rise above the surrounding air temperature.
Mind Temperature Limits
Whenever possible, store your battery in a dry, temperature-controlled environment and follow the temperature limits specified in your product's owner's manual. Avoid storing your battery in locations that can become excessively hot, such as an unventilated garage, outdoor shed, or the trunk of a hot vehicle.
Store on a Safe Surface
When the battery is removed from the bike, place it on a flat, solid, non-flammable surface such as concrete, stone, or tile. Keep it away from loose fabrics, combustible materials, and direct heat sources.
Smart Charging Practices
Allow the Battery to Cool Before Charging
After a long ride in warm weather, allow the battery to cool before connecting it to the charger. Charging a battery while it is excessively warm can add unnecessary thermal stress.
Charge in a Cool, Well-Ventilated Area
Charge your battery in a dry, well-ventilated location away from direct sunlight. Never cover the battery or charger with towels, bags, blankets, or other materials while charging.
Use the Appropriate Charger
Always use the charger supplied with your Heybike or an authorized replacement recommended for your specific model. Do not use an incompatible or uncertified third-party charger.
Disconnect After Charging
Once the battery has reached a full charge, disconnect the charger according to the instructions in your owner's manual. Avoid leaving a battery connected to a charger continuously for extended periods.
Riding & Handling Tips
Be Mindful During Extreme Heat
When riding in very hot conditions, avoid unnecessarily prolonged operation at maximum power, particularly on long or steep climbs. Allowing the bike and battery to cool when needed can help manage heat buildup.
Inspect the Battery After an Impact
If your battery has been dropped or subjected to a significant impact, stop using it and inspect it for visible damage, including cracks, dents, swelling, or unusual odors. If you notice damage or anything unusual, contact Heybike support before using or charging the battery again.
Keep the Battery Dry
Heybike batteries are designed for normal riding conditions specified for each model, but they should not be submerged in water. Never use a high-pressure power washer directly on the battery or electrical components.
What to Do If You Notice Unusual Battery Behavior
If your battery becomes unusually hot while not in use, begins to swell, produces an unusual odor, makes abnormal sounds, or shows signs of smoke, stop using and charging the battery immediately.
- Stop charging or using the e-bike.
- If it is safe to do so, move away from the bike or battery and keep people and combustible materials away from the area.
- Do not attempt to open, repair, disassemble, or modify the battery yourself.
- Contact Heybike Customer Support or your authorized Heybike dealer for assistance.
If there is smoke, fire, or an immediate safety emergency, move to a safe location and contact the appropriate local emergency services.
